Mental Health Commissioner Dr Lesley van Schoubroeck was a guest speaker at the Partners in Recovery Forum on 26 March, which was hosted by Greater Metro South Brisbane Medicare Local.
The Forum was an opportunity to showcase the achievements of the network, highlight existing projects and plan for the future. It brought together people from a wide range of government and non-government organisations.
Dr van Schoubroeck provided an overview of the Queensland Mental Health Commission, an outline of the evolving strategic plan and discussed the challenges which lie ahead for public sector agencies.
The ensuing discussion was generally supportive of the proposed vision, although it was suggested that the language used to frame drug and alcohol issues would need further thought. A commitment to address systemic barriers between general health and mental health was supported as was a focus on the cultural issues for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. There was also a suggestion that there needs to be more focused attention on disability and mental health.
