Minister’s meeting with the community mental health sector
About the meeting
On 24 November 2016, we hosted a meeting with the Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services, the Honourable Cameron Dick MP and representatives of Queensland’s community mental health sector. Dr John Wakefield, Queensland Health Deputy Director-General also attended.
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss opportunities and challenges ahead for people living with mental illness and the sector.
The meeting complements the event held earlier this year with the Minister and the alcohol and other drugs services community sector.
Issues raised
Connecting Care to Recovery services plan
The community mental health sector representatives congratulated the State Government, the Minister and Queensland Health on the new Connecting Care to Recovery 2016-2021: A plan for Queensland’s State-funded mental health, alcohol and other drug services and the additional funding of $350 million over five years to support it.
National Disability Insurance Scheme
Continuing concerns about the transition to the NDIS and the need to ensure continuity of care were raised.
Representatives identified the positive work which is resulting from the Queensland Transition to the NDIS for Mental Health Forum, convened by the Queensland Alliance for Mental Health and initiated by the Commission in 2015.
Engagement and planning
Queensland Health has made a commitment to continue working with the community mental health sector to address the issues raised at the meeting.
