Queensland Mental Health Commissioner Ivan Frkovic today said it is fundamental that mental health services be delivered in a way that upholds people’s human rights, is trauma-informed and is person-led and centred.
“While mental health reform has gained significant traction over the past 30 years, we are mindful of harm that may have occurred historically.
“An investigation in relation to health services provided at the Wolston Park Hospital must be conducted with dignity, sensitivity and compassion for all involved.”
Mr Frkovic thanked the Minister for Mental Health Shannon Fentiman for her support of people affected and for enabling the review process to give a voice to those who have raised concerns about health services provided at Wolston Park between the 1950s and 1990s.
“First and foremost, this process must enable people to tell their stories in a respectful and sensitive way.
“We’re committed to making this process supportive of the needs of people who may have experienced harm at Wolston Park Hospital, including their families and carers.”
Mr Frkovic said the Queensland Mental Health Commission was currently planning the review process and will soon be commencing consultations on the draft terms of reference.
“We are working as quickly as possible to get the process up and running but it will take a little time to enable this to happen,” Mr Frkovic said.
“In the interim, I invite people interested in the review process to submit their contact details through our website, and we will follow up as soon as possible.”
